Open Source

There has been good coverage of open source software (OSS) today. If you are a company’s CEO, your system administrators probably will use the Apache Web Server, a MySQL database, the scripting language PHP or the Unix-type operating system Linux already. Furthermore the software development tool Eclipse will likely be applied by your software engineers as well. Functionality of many websites has been extended by open source content management or blogging systems. In the end you probably visit these websites by using the open source web browser Firefox. Some companies as well as more and more public authorities replace proprietary office software suites by OpenOffice.

Besides the system related software programs an increasing market for enterprise applications in the fields of Business Intelligence (BI), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has been developed as well. Would you have thought that well-known companies as Motorola, Ford, Vodafone, and the Bank of America are implementing open source tools? Compared with commercial software solutions OS enterprise applications do have pros and cons, but the products are worth a look – definitely!

You will know for sure from press coverage or from your friends that the implementation of open source software could save some money and the released source code is beneficial indeed. But you are right thinking that cannot be all! Especially when applications, such as ERP systems, are highly complex some more aspects have to be considered. On the following sites we focus on these points and will explain them to you.
