Travelling the Road to Enterprise Open Source: OSS Central kicks off

Food for thought on OS BI, CRM and ERP – that’s the motto of OSS Central. In the last years I did a lot of research in the area of enterpise open source software (OSS). Commonly, OSS is associated with well-known projects like the Apache HTTP Server, the Linux operating system and the productivity suite OpenOffice. Less known are projects in the area of Business Intelligence (BI), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). This kind of software depends heavily on business logic which is modelled in the software. It takes longer to implement such systems because you need experts who are rare. As a consequence, the list of available software is relatively short. Nevertheless, many projects are worth a closer look. They are already in use by companies around the world and in many cases gained a lot of venture capital. This shows their increasing importance and leads to interesting questions which I would like to address with this website project:

  • Can enterprise OSS replace well-established commercial software?
  • Is enterprise OSS innovative or just copying the functionality of commercial software? How much behind or ahead is OSS?
  • Which business models are behind enterprise OSS?
  • Which challenges are users facing when they adopt enterprise OSS?
  • What is the real advantage of using enterprise OSS? How much benefit in terms of costs can be gained?
  • How can the adoption of enterprise OSS be measured?
  • How can enterprise OSS be selected and evaluated?
  • Is it possible to run a whole company only with OSS?

In my upcoming articles I will present my own ideas as well as interesting research and articles of others, targetting the interested public as well as corporate decision makers and the OSS community. If you would like to contribute please let me know.
